THERMAL DISPOSAL PRODUCTS

El Dorado Engineering (EDE) has developed a wide array of products to thermally dispose of energetic wastes, such as propellants, explosives and pyrotechnic materials.  We draw from our extensive experience to tailor the right technical and business solutions to each client's needs.

EXPLOSIVE WASTE INCINERATOR (EWI)

The rotary kiln incinerator, or EWI, is based on the US Army's APE 1236 demilitarization furnace and is in use worldwide.  The cast steel retort sections have an internal helix which moves the waste forward, and isolates successive feeds from propagating explosions.  The EWI disposes bulk explosives and propellants, as well as configured items such as small arms ammunition up to 20 mm.  Larger items can also be processed with proper preparation.  Feed systems, controls, and air pollution control equipment are tailored to the client's specifications.

CONTAMINATED WASTE PROCESSOR (CWP)

This car bottom furnace treats contaminated combustible waste such as rags, gloves, wipes, fiber drums, pallets, plastic, coveralls, etc.  Typically, the CWP does not require a RCRA permit and is capable of batch or continuous feed operations.  Operational controls and air pollution control equipment are tailored to each application.  EDE offers small and large units in standard or customized configurations.

LARGE CWP 7 feet high, 8.5 feet wide, 21.5 feet long.  600 lbs/hr combustible waste (approximate)
SMALL CWP 6 feet high, 7 feet wide, 13 feet long.  300 lbs/hr combustible waste (approximate)

  FLASHING FURNACE

Operations involving UXO clearance, remediation of explosive processing buildings, or handling military test range target debris, often produce metal parts with explosive contamination.  This material, known as 3X, is closely controlled and cannot be released directly to the public.  EDE's flashing furnace thermally decontaminates these materials to the 5X level so they can be sent to metal recyclers.  Up to 10,000 pounds of contaminated metal can be flashed per hour.  The furnace can be installed in a fixed location, or can be trailer mounted for field applications such as UXO operations or remedial actions.  When flashing contaminated metals, furnace emissions--even without expensive pollution control devices--are typically below the de minimis levels established by most states, and operations require no permits.

CONTAINED BURN

Energetic wastes and small amounts of contaminated trash can be treated in an EDE-designed contained burn system.  The system encloses the burning process and meters off-gases through pollution control equipment tailored to the waste stream.  Waste can be fed in batches or continuously.  Costs are modest and environmental permits are much simpler compared to incinerators and a wide variety of wastes and feed rates can be accommodated.

 SQUIB BURNER

For makers/users of small explosive initiating devices called squibs, EDE has developed a small unit to dispose of excess, off-spec, or waste items.  Ten to fifteen squibs at a time are fed into a thermal enclosure where they are contained while functioning.  Small quantities of initiating devices can be efficiently disposed in this unit.

OPEN BURN/OPEN DETONATION

In those cases where open burning is allowed, EDE provides environmental permitting, burn pans, pads, and operations support equipment and facilities.  We can also provide operational procedures and controls to assure safe and environmentally sound destruction of hazardous energetic materials.  As required, combustion and air dispersion modeling can be performed in support of permit applications and compliance activities (see ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCTS).
